The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing is seeking new ways to construct starter houses for the most vulnerable citizens and as a result will be accepting proposals and quotations in fiscal year 2022 from private sector building contractors to construct Pre-Fabricated Houses.

As well, the Ministry is seeking suitable land to create new housing development projects within close proximity to towns and villages.

The first project under review is a Proposal to build Pre-Fab Houses in the Camp Oakley area of Burrell Boom. This proposed housing project will see the construction of fifty (50) starter houses in the year 2022-2023.

This proposal will be vetted by a Technical Engineering Team from MIDH to look at the structural integrity of the construction design. The design will also have to be approved by the Central Building Authority (CBA) in order to meet structural codes and regulations.

This new method of building will certainly take the Ministry more towards the provision of much needed low- income houses for deserving citizens. Also, with the acquisition of new lands for housing development, more housing projects will follow and new housing programs to come.

Housing programs continuing and others under consideration are:

  1. Low- Income Starter Houses;
  2. Houses for qualified Public Officers;
  3. Houses for Military personnel;
  4. Houses for young couples starting a family.

The financial year 2022-2023 for the MIDH will see a more aggressive move towards the provision of houses to meet housing demands by a cross-section of individuals and families nationwide. In 2022, MIDH will also work more closely with government financial institutions to provide the necessary capital to funds future housing programs.

With a collaborative effort by the Government of Belize, MIDH, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Petroleum and Mining and Government funded financial institutions (Development Finance Corporation & National Bank of Belize), a positive socio-economic impact will occur from a policy decision to address the shortages in housing and the inequities for the poor.
